Choose the buying model and identify which connections exist. The calculator adds only the selected work allowances, so you can see what drives the budget. All dollar ranges are editorial US planning allowances, not current price observations, local bids, or a measured national average.

Six distinct project scopes

Base allowances are $300–$1,600 for a DIY retail project, $900–$2,800 for professionally installed retail, $1,800–$5,500 for dealer installation, $2,500–$6,500 for an installed dual-tank softener, and $1,000–$4,000 for an installed passive salt-free conditioner. They assume ordinary accessible connections. The cost guide explains how equipment, service commitments, and installation scope affect comparison.

Rental is separate: $100–$500 setup plus $25–$80 monthly. The first-year result adds setup, selected work, and twelve monthly payments. Later-year payment totals exclude setup; they do not assume a fixed renewal rate, included salt, free maintenance, or eventual ownership. Review the rental guide before comparing a contract with a purchase.

Optional work and exclusions

Missing-loop allowance is $250–$700; missing suitable drain adds $200–$600; missing outlet adds $150–$400; removal adds $50–$200; well-water pretreatment adds $500–$2,000. A passive conditioner does not receive brine-drain or electrical add-ons. Other conditioning technologies may require a different installation scope.

The conditioner model covers a separate product class. NSF describes residential cation-exchange softeners in its NSF/ANSI 44 overview; calling a product salt-free does not make it equivalent hardness removal.

Permits, tax, major rerouting, structural work, ongoing salt, water, and service are not itemized here. Pretreatment is a budget placeholder, not a well-water treatment design. Obtain an itemized installer quote with the exact model, verified working capacity, connection work, and service terms.
