Water Softener Sizing: Capacity, Flow and Regeneration

A softener needs enough hardness-removal capacity between regenerations and enough service flow for the fixtures running together. Those are separate requirements. A large number on the box does not settle both.

Start with a current hardness test at an untreated tap. Record the unit, source and date. Convert mg/L as calcium carbonate to grains per gallon with the hardness converter before entering controller settings or doing capacity arithmetic.

Follow the sizing sequence

Use the size calculator to build a planning scenario. Its estimated consumption and target interval are adjustable assumptions; measured usage and a model's performance table take precedence.

Bring the results to a quote

Ask the installer to identify the proposed working capacity, salt dose, rated service flow, reserve method and water used per regeneration. A quote that supplies only a “48,000-grain” label leaves the operating settings unresolved.

EPA's May 2026 selection guide connects sizing to incoming hardness and household consumption and recommends demand-initiated regeneration. Use those principles to compare systems before comparing installed cost.
