Water Softener Planning Tools · Guide

Water softener planning tools

A useful softener calculation starts with measured hardness and the water that will actually pass through the resin. Our tools connect those inputs to working capacity, regeneration, salt, and a clearly scoped project budget. They produce discussion targets for a supplier or installer rather than selecting an advertised grain-size label.

Start with the unit on your water test

The hardness converter translates grains per US gallon, milligrams per liter, and approximate parts per million. It classifies the result using the USGS hardness scale. A TDS meter does not supply the total-hardness input this process needs. If the measurement is missing, use the hardness testing guide first.

Connect load, capacity, and salt

Use the softener size calculator to estimate daily grains and the working capacity needed for your selected interval. It separates bare demand from an editorial 20% load allowance and flags the separate peak-flow check.

Then open the salt usage calculator with usable capacity and salt dose from the same operating setting. It distinguishes capacity-driven regeneration from your selected calendar schedule. Example inputs make the tools usable; they are not verified ratings for a product.

Budget the actual buying model

The cost calculator separates DIY retail, professionally installed retail, dealer, dual-tank, passive salt-free conditioner, and rental scenarios. Its dollar ranges are editorial allowances. Collect local itemized quotes before deciding, using the installer scope guide to compare equivalent work.
