Water Softener Leaking: Locate the Source Safely
Water beside a softener may come from a connection, valve, tank, overflow or nearby plumbing. Protect people and property before trying to identify a component. The location where water collects may not be the location where it starts.
Stay out of standing water near electrical equipment. Do not touch a wet outlet, power supply or control, and do not operate electrical equipment while standing in water. CDC flood-safety guidance explains this electrical hazard.
Isolate only from a safe position
If the documented bypass or water-shutoff procedure is known and the controls are safely accessible, follow it. A bypass configuration may not stop every leak, especially a leaking bypass assembly or upstream connection. If the source remains uncontrolled, arrange urgent plumbing help and use a known upstream shutoff only if it is safe to do so.
Do not loosen fittings under pressure or open the valve to find the leak. Unplugging an electronic controller alone does not necessarily stop water through the equipment.
Record where water first appears
From a safe, dry position, note whether the first visible moisture is at the inlet connection, outlet connection, bypass, valve head, resin tank, salt tank or drain area. A photograph and timing can help. Note whether leakage is constant or appears during regeneration.
Rheem's external-leak guide distinguishes several locations on its units. That supports locating the source before repair; it does not establish that another model needs the same seal or part.
Route the symptom correctly
Water escaping because the salt tank is overfilled belongs in overflow troubleshooting. Water passing continuously to a properly connected drain belongs in constant-running diagnosis. A nearby backed-up floor drain requires its own plumbing evaluation.
Do not cap an overflow or drain hose. Do not patch a pressurized resin tank as a permanent repair. Have a qualified provider assess the vessel, connections, pressure and any damage before returning the system to service.
Request evidence for repair or replacement
Ask for the leak source, cause and affected part in writing. A replaceable external connection differs from a damaged pressure vessel or several failing components. Check the actual warranty terms before ordering parts; labor, water damage and service trips may have different coverage.
Compare the diagnosed repair scope with replacement after the immediate leak is controlled. The completed work should include verification that connections remain dry in service and during a full normal regeneration, plus a discussion of suitable leak detection with the installer.
